Resources for Visitors
We hope that your stay in Knoxville is pleasant. While you are in town, you may be interested in learning about the various community events, attractions and entertainment options that make Knoxville unique.
Once you are in Knoxville, the easiest way to find out what is happening is to pick up a copy of the Metro Pulse, our free weekly newspaper. It’s packed full of event listings and available in just about any part of town. New issues are released every Thursday.
The daily newspaper is the Knoxville News Sentinel. On Fridays, it includes the Knoxville.com section with movie schedules, concert listings, and entertainment news. For information on the arts and cultural happenings in Knoxville, pick up the Sunday paper for the Life & Arts section.
In addition to the Tennessee Theatre, there are a variety of theaters and clubs in downtown Knoxville. In fact, Gay Street is referred to as the “Theater District,” and it is easy to see why. Just down the street, you can visit another historic venue, the Bijou Theatre, housed in Knoxville’s oldest business building and rumored to be the most haunted site in town. The Bijou is renowned for its intimacy and incredible acoustics – widely considered to be the best in the Southeast.
Head in the opposite direction and you’ll see the Regal Riviera, a movie theater named after another historic theater that once graced Gay Street. Keep going until you hit the 100 block of Gay Street and visit the Emporium Center for Arts & Culture, which houses the Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville, Actors Co-op, The Carpetbag Theatre, Tennessee Stage Company, Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, Circle Modern Dance, and the gallery and studio spaces for a number of fine artists.
The Knoxville Tourism & Sports Corporation is Knoxville’s answer to a convention and visitor’s bureau. They operate the Visitors’ Center at One Vision Plaza (301 South Gay Street), located at the corner of Gay Street and Summit Hill (you’ll know you are in the right place when you see the scrolling electronic news ticker on their building – a taste of Times Square right in downtown Knoxville). Stop in at noon any weekday for the WDVX Blue Plate Special, a free concert that is broadcast live over the radio. Lunch is available or you can bring your own. Artists who play the Blue Plate range from local up and coming acts to nationally recognized superstars. WDVX is an internationally recognized radio station based in Knoxville, and their studios are located in One Vision Plaza.
Thinking of moving to Knoxville? Visit the Knoxville Area Chamber Partnership, located on Market Square. They share space with the Central Business Improvement District, whose web site can give you more in-depth information about downtown-area businesses and available housing.
